Spotlight: Healthy Families St. Lucie

cynthia t

Healthy Families St. Lucie County is an evidence-based best practice home visitation program designed for expectant parents and parents of newborns. The program promotes child well-being and prevents the abuse and neglect of children. Since its inception, our local Healthy Families program has maintained a high standard of intervention for families, often garnering statewide recognition. The letter below was sent from a recent program participant.

My name is Cynthia and I have participated in the Healthy Families program for over two years. When I started, I was in an RN program and found out I was pregnant with twins. I was immediately overwhelmed and so scared that I quit school. I was lost. Shortly after this I met my worker, Julie. Over the next few months, she encouraged me and built my confidence back up. After the twins were born, Julie encouraged me to go back to school, taking one class at a time.

Two years later, with Julie's help, I have a daily routine that my children are doing great with. The twins are in childcare part-time (Julie helped me with the application for Early Learning Coalition assistance) and I am now enrolled in my last class!

I want to thank Julie for always being there to encourage, support and root me on. With her help, I'm going to reach my goal of getting my nursing license while also having my children excel. They are both walking, talking and thriving thanks to Healthy Families and Julie's support.
