Program Spotlight: Mentoring Makes a Difference

In our Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) programs, mentorship is all about building a trusting relationship.

This spotlight story features the relationship between Big, Drake*, and his Little, Amos* and the relationship they have built over the past months. Amos is 10 years old and being raised by a single mom who struggled with being able to do outdoor activities with him, and Amos loves to be outside. Enter Big Brother Drake who happens to love outdoor activities as much as his Little. They immediately bonded over their love of the outdoors, often going to play a round of golf after school.

Big Drake easily incorporated math skills into their golf games, allowing Little Amos to keep the score card, noting the par for each hole and whether they were over, under, or even. They even guess at the distance of each hole, teaching measurement without even realizing it. But the real test came when Amos' mom asked if Drake would be willing to teach Amos how to ride his bike - without the training wheels. Amos was very resistant at first, but with his Big Brother's unending patience, and the level of trust he had developed in his Big, the big day finally arrived when Amos took off on his own with his Big Brother running right beside him and offering his encouragement.

Amos loves to bike ride now so much that they take frequent bike excursions together, exploring different parts of the county and enjoying nature. Each outing provides an opportunity for Amos to talk with Drake about school, friends, and his dreams for the future. Mom is overjoyed with the match, and constantly tells the BBBS Match Support Specialist how grateful she is that her son has such a caring male role model in his life.
